Caterpillars are the larvae of moths and butterflies.
Some of which feed on the plants we grow to eat or populate our gardens and greenhouses with.
Caterpillars cause damage by chewing and eating leaves, flowers, seeds and fruit, often leaving frass where they have been eating.
To protect plants from caterpillar attack, the first step can be the use of Pheromone traps to catch some of the harmful moth species such as Codling Moths and Plum Fruit Moths.
They provide an early warning system for future caterpillar infestations.

Carrot Root Fly [Psila rosae ] is a small black fly that lays eggs, which develop into creamy-yellow coloured larvae that damage Carrots and other vegetables like Carrots, Parsnips and Celery.
The larvae burrow into the Carrot roots making tunnels.
The symptoms can show as rusty brown scars.
The damage can become so bad that the carrots become un-edible.
An early sign of Carrot Fly activity can be a blue-purple colouring of the Carrot plant foilage.
Thee are normally 2 generations a year of Carrot Root Fly, one in May-June and the next in August-September.

There are six species of Chafer beetles in the U.K. Several of these species can cause significant damage to lawns and turf in their larval stage.
The most common species is the Garden Chafer [Phyllopertha horticola], which emerges as adults from lawns in May-June.
It quickly mates and starts to lay eggs that develop into larvae or grubs from about late July - early August.
If left un-treated these grubs will continue to feed in grass roots into the autumn.
Once the soil temperatures drop, then feeding slows and stops.
