Wasps are common throughout the UK during the Spring and Summer months.
They are social insects that commonly form their nests in cavity walls, roof voids, outbuildings and shrubbery.
Due to their ability to deliver multiple painful and occasionally fatal stings, wasps are a significant cause of distress to people.
If you discover a wasp's nest in or around your home, this can be cause for concern, especially if you have small children or somebody with an allergy to wasp stings.
Here at Pest Arrest, we strongly advise you do not tackle this yourself unless you have the correct training to do so, and do not attempt to remove it if you're allergic to stings.
The common rat is the most common in the UK and is most reviled for spreading disease.
Responsible for the spread of the bubonic plague and, more recently, leptospirosis (Weil's Disease), among others, there are numbers estimated at 80-90million in the UK alone.
Rats can cause damage to structures of buildings as well as to electrical systems and pipework as they gnaw anything and everything to combat the continuous growth of their teeth.
Rat activity can be reasonably suspected should there be signs of droppings, gnawing, burrowing or greasy marks from their oily bodies.
Fleas feed off the blood of a host, usually a dog, cat, rat or human.
They will usually live as parasites on warm-blooded vertebrates.
However, in the absence of a host, they often live in fabric, with carpet being perfect for larvae to develop.
In the UK, fleas (although feeding on blood) are, in general, not responsible for the spread of disease, although in the past were thought to be responsible for the transference of the bubonic plague from rats to humans.
The effects of a flea bite include an intense itching sensation and sometimes allergic reactions.
Ants are social creatures living in huge colonies consisting of workers, soldiers, drones and queens.
The most common UK Ant is the Black Ant which usually nests in gardens or wall cavities, becoming a pest when entering the property searching for food.
During the summer, swarms of winged female queens and males can be seen usually only for 3-4 days.
They mate in mid-air, with the male then dying and the female setting up a new nest.
Ants, as well as being unpleasant house guests, can also damage food used for human consumption.
Cockroaches are thought to have been in the UK for around 200 years.
They are gregarious and nocturnal creatures who need warm conditions to thrive.
A pest in their own right domestically but much more of a concern commercially due to the spread of disease can usually be found in the highest numbers in the warmer areas of a property.
By day they seek harbourage in cracks and crevices and always require thorough treatment to achieve full control.
Often associated with the spread of numerous diseases such as dysentery, gastroenteritis and typhoid, the cockroaches diet includes food for human consumption.
